Oklahoma Firsts: Parking meter Shopping Cart Oklahoma pilot Robert Ragozzino was the first person to circumnavigate the globe in a bi-plane. The aerosol can was invented here. Oklahoma is the first State to build a flood-control dam. The State is the first and, so far, only capitol in the world to have an oil well under it. The State was the first to have a Broadway musical named for it. Our State set the pace for the others with the first State-run employment service, the Nation's first community hospital, and the first State to experiment with "mother's pensions". Oklahoma was also the first State to elect a woman to a major State office (Kate Barnard, commissioner of charities and corrections 1907 and 1910). Oklahoma has produced more astronauts than any other State. For all that's known, this State may be the very first to have its FAQ on the World Wide Web. On March 25, 1948, the first tornado forecast ever was issued in Oklahoma. Since producing the first tornado warning, this State has lead the world in meteorological prognostication tools and training. In addition to the Storm Prediction Center and the National Severe Storms Laboratory in our State, Oklahoma also has OK-First and Mesonet, both cutting-edge technology tools available to the Citizens. StormReady is a National program developed in OK One of the first visitors to what would become Oklahoma may have been the Vikings.
